I want to move to a cul-de-sac,
I say way way way way back in the suburbs,
where your blues can’t find me.
To get lost on a street with no name
in a house with the lawn mowed the same as the others—
that way even the drones won’t mind me.
Gonna find a long-legged Moll
to sleep in the kitchen with her feet in the hall.
In the suburbs she’ll protect me and
treat me nice, or treat me mean—
either way she’s gonna keep my hands clean
in the suburbs.
I say way way way way back in the suburbs.
We’ll go out and buy a new car,
something electric that can’t travel too far
from the suburbs, where your blues can't find me.
We’ll go to Penney’s and buy a new suit,
something to cover up your pretty face tattooed
all over my body.
Oh and please don’t remind me:
Gotta change my number, gotta change my name back to something more apropos the cul-de-sac,
I gotta leave my wife before she posts bail
or I’ll have another hellhound on my trail,
I’ll be drinking frappuccino with the HOA
(let’s face it, they’re watching anyway),
and sign me up for the GOP
where your blues will never even think
to find me.
In the suburbs.
I say way way way way back in the suburbs.
On a cul-de-sac.

I’m going down
to Denvertown.
Gonna hang around
with you and your baby.
Gonna fill your cup.
Gonna fill it on up
‘til enough is enough
and it’s just me and your baby.
Gonna talk about you
and all the things that you do.
Gonna paint the town blue.
That’s me and you, baby.
(Paint the town blue, huh?
Well, let me fill your cup.
Fill it on up….
There. Enough is enough.)

And if so

I should like to know
even if you’re staying
would you rather go
and if so
what’s the game we’re playing
lines I should be saying
if you’re staying
but you’d rather go.
Probably shouldn’t say this:
feels more like a handshake, this kiss,
but I will confess
you look so good in that faded dress.
Baby it’s cold outside
should I get your coat and hat
and let you go?
If so
I should like to know
will I hear from you tomorrow?
I will confess
you look so good in that faded dress
but let’s call this a near-miss.
Baby it’s cold outside
waiting for the ride
to take you home.
Why don’t you watch through the window?
